A joint initiative from the Politecnico di Milano, the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) in Macau and the Keio University in Tokyo created the international workshop “Transitional spaces for smart, sustainable and sensuous settlements – Improving the Lecco Rowing Club sports facilities on Lake Como”. The workshop happened at the Politecnico di Milano.

In this joined movement from Asian and European top universities, Professor Nuno Soares, Acting Head of the Department of Architecture from the USJ, was one of the invited instructors contributing with the “Shape by Use – Individual Designs Reshaping the City “ presentation.

The “transitional spaces” concept was examined through a specific case study:the expansion of the Lecco Rowing Club facilities, located on the lake shore next to the city’s historic center. The workshop tackled points of view from urban design perspectives, energy efficiency, human behavior or building technology.

After close deliberation and study of the site, it was created an indoor pool with special attention to maintaining a connection between the indoor and outdoor spaces. The project’s final results were exhibited at the Polo territoriale di Lecco and at the Società Canottieri di Lecco.
